Hi everyone, I'm just starting to learn typesetting and was wondering if anyone's got some hints/practices they're willing to share.

I've read some guides on the net and the aegisub help guide so far.

Thanks in advance Smile
My own "typesetting code" (I hope it helps you):
  • Always use easily readable fonts
  • Character-based subtitle coloring is annoying. Don't do it. Two colors are enough: One for "main" dialogue and another for "secondary" dialogue.
  • Everything is softsubbed. NO EXCEPTIONS.
  • Try to find fonts that match the overall mood of the anime and/or specific scenes.
  • Don't be a perfectionist. It's not worth it, believe me. I've been there. Dodgy
  • Have a respectable font collection, but as I said above, your priority MUST BE readability.
  • If your subtitles detract attention from the main feature, you are doing it wrong.
  • Use darker colors for the outlines, and whenever possible use a bit of transparency on them. It reduces the overall impact of the subtitles on the video, making it easier on the eyes.
  • When typesetting signs, try to make them look as part of the original video. If it's not possible or just too hard, just make a note instead.
